Cashmere - Water Emergency
![]()
Wenatchee River DroughtIn Tuesday's Wenatchee World, there was an article about the drought throughout the region, causing the Mayor of Cashmere (George Valison) to declare a water emergency. The Mayor has asked residents to voluntarily reduce their water useage by 20%. The city has taken steps to reduce their overall use by the same percentage.
Cashmere receives their water from a pipe in the Wenatchee River, which is running at about 35% of normal flow. The water is running so low, it could fall below the pipe if the water restrictions are not followed.
According to the article in the paper, if the voluntary measures do not work, the conservation measures would become mandatory and fines would be levied on those who do not comply.
Here are some conservation suggestions:
* Water yards less and not during daylight hours (when evaporation is high) or on windy days.
* Don't let faucets run while brushing teeth, shaving, or rinsing veggies.
* Take shorter showers (or a shower instead of bath)
* Run washing machines and dishwashers only when full
* Use a broom or blower instead of washing off sidewalks and driveways
* Turn off ice makers and use trays instead
* Repair leaky pipes, faucets and toilets
If everyone cooperates, a little change by a lot of people can make a big difference.
